EDU 740 Curriculum Design: Teaching Language Arts in the Waldorf School – 3 cr.
For students enrolled in the Grades certificate program, this course will include an in depth look at the 1-8 language arts curriculum, including the introduction to the alphabet and to reading through stories, verses and drawing; approaches to grammar; editing; and teaching outlines, story maps, research papers and debate in the middle school, etc. Activities will include hands on work preparing and presenting a group play. Recommended Reading – Sing me the Creation, by Paul Matthews and Wish, Wonder and Surprise, by Eugene Schwartz.
Students in the Early Childhood certificate program will explore the four elements, the seasons and the festival life of the Waldorf school as central to curriculum design.
Grades students will make hard bound lesson books from spiral bound sketchbooks. Grades participants will also be preparing a language arts lesson block from one of the 1-8 blocks. Early Childhood participants will be planning a kindergarten block (choosing a month/season).
The required text will be: Balance in Teaching, by Rudolf Steiner. Handouts will be provided from Developing the Curriculum, by Peter Oliva, and Basic Principles of Curriculum, by Ralph Tyler.
